I'm amazed to find myself here, meeting you from Brisbane. I don't know about customs and tryptophan. I've never tried doing that. I've heard that GABA and its relatives are a problem. I'd have thought that tryptophan was OK. I use 5htp but I buy it from an outfit that has already imported it. The reason you can't contact me through psychobabble is that I've been blocked. The Politics Board. It's a standing provocation I'm unable to resist. I referred to the unwisdom of the current Adminstration. I wonder what this Url business is. All the best.

I thought you may have been blocked, but, I guess you may already know, I purposely restrict myself to the alter board..so I wasn't going to go around looking for find out... a waste time-wise AND a tad upsetting.
I would never have thought of looking on the politics board anyway , LOL.
I know social and admin are places I don't like the atmosphere of. I think the politics board must be new since I used to read a few of the other boards:-)
Boy I'd be banned for life or something if I even edged around my politic thoughts on the US! I'm sure it's fine if you say how wonderful it is
I don't like anyone being gagged..so I hope some others find this and say hi to ya too.

A month this time. I just have this particular problem with the current President(which many people do, and maybe that's why they reelected him). The thing is I love talking about religion and politics. I tried the Faith Board for a bit, but nooone was interested in the Gospel according to Thomas, or the similarites between aspects of the liturgy and bondage and discipline. Even worse noone was interested in the liturgy. Admin is technical, and social anywhere for me has always been bad for me. But I'm stubborn and will not listen etc etc. I'd actually feel more comfortable if psychobabble was run from a third world country, one like Vietnam that has an active memory of US foreign policy. So clearly I shouldn't go to the Politics Board. What to do? When my block is over I shall probably post some inflammatory 'modest proposal' thingo, laced with irony, sarcasm and invective and be blocked for a year.

Dear Declan,

You could always use sarcastic compliments which appeared to be a well honed style on the social and admin boards(when I used to glance there well over a year ago. I thought the compliments had more impact when utterred in a slightly condescending way.. then the other party reacted to the slight they perceived and.. guess what! Well that was my impression anyway :-)
Shakes head here..... maybe there was something in the cultural divide I was misinterpreting?

Hey, you could even combine your religious and political bents and lament that there appears to be no way of your favourite politician becoming a saint? (joking, to be fair it seems to be partly a lack of understanding sadly?.. or in other words .. incompetence for the job)
BTW it's not only Vietnam...
But really Declan, you have to decide whether its worth the effort, whether you have any slight chance of achieving anything or even getting your view understood, if it really makes you feel like that much better , .. then again I'd better keep quiet as it's your choice!

Speaking for myself only, I can't see how posting on those boards helps anyone, especially me.:-) Then again I don't enjoy posting and trying to express myself in writing and typing a real chore.. so if I don't enjoy it and it doesn't help anyone or at least give them a bit of a laugh to help brighten their day.. I try not to do it :-) hence no other boards for me.
Curiosity is difficult to contain sometimes though.
.. and thus ends this Sunday morning's sermon... sorry
OTOH if it was a spoken conversation and not a written one.. I'd probably be there trying to put in my 2c worth too.

How about a posting guide at the top of the board ...

"This board is NOT a place to express your strong political feelings, "because people who support Bush (or whomever) *are* reading".
If you do not agree with them, "this may make them feel uncomfortable".
You must be " respect the views of others and be sensitive to their feelings" The aim of this board is to make all readers feel good about themselves.
Of course if you do have strong evidence/facts and arguments and present them in a calm matter of fact manner it will be all the more reason to make "people who support Bush (or whomever) *are* reading"..
( ie whichever people may have supported this party/person/policy)
to feel uncomfortable.. so sound rational arguments are not an acceptable excuse for posting anything that "may make them feel uncomfortable".

....DR BOB Can you see why some people think a politics board cannot be a great concept with the above aim .. maybe even incompatible with the concept of providing a cozy place for people to feel good about themselves in.??....back to these guidelines for the top of the board

If you can find a way to disagree respectfully and sensitively about an idea or policy you may post it in a style that will make people feel cozy and reassured, good about themselves, preferably with some positive alternative suggestions.

Attacking a person is out.
(It's a bit like footy really.....'play the ball not the man'.... umm, except for codes like Rugby Leagye where you tackle the person...)
Attacking a person can be merely expressing dislike of a person, even if you feel strongly and have much evidence that their policies have caused unquestionable destruction, injury, mass murder, or destruction even everlasting destruction of another countries environment making it impossible for them for live off their land?
I assume this rule will also apply to non US citizens as well..like Saddam, Hitler? Nothing negative can ever be uttered about a politician?

Can you can express dislike of their policies or implementation of them?... or does this come under the the "'not making people feel good about themselves.. if they may have supported the person?" ..
e.g. If you want to discuss Hitler, you may only mention the positive, cozy policies that you think of , any mention of concentration camps or such has a strong likelihood of many readers feel uncomfortable or upset.

As it says here.. negative campaigning focuses on a attacking a PERSONALITY...not a POLICY.
However in when discussing US politics the US the president does determine the policy to a large extent, so it is impossible to separate.
Rather like discussing Iraq politics , a few years ago, without Saddam.
Very difficult to say anything negative about the policies or their implementation with only positive feel-good statements about the person.

I suggest at least renaming the board to
"Cosy Compliments of US politics" board
with above posting guidelines below.. either that or delete the board.. which makes a lot more sense.

Of course that does depend on your actual motives for the board I guess. I do suggest that politics is not a topic that leads to cozy feel-good feelings on all sides, if that is the aim of board discussion.

I sincerely wish posters some posters could just stay away. If it helps.. you're not going to influence anyone who counts.

BTW Dr.Bob.. ..I'd really like you to write some new guidelines and chair question time in the Oz parliament.

To sum up I agree "Politics is a powerful subject and something which evokes VERY strong feelings in people " ..and IMO is not a topic that can be discussed on ANY board without provoking some feelings which will differ, which means if a something makes a few feel good.. it makes others feel the opposite... even if they aren't vocal about it.

I'll stop now.. it sure appears to me that on this board you cannot have a reasonable discussion and express your thoughts..all that appears to be allowed is FOR side of the debate.. not the AGAINST side? You can approve and give compliments, but not say anything negative?

Politics does evoke powerful emotions, as you think of the effect it has on sooo many people, their environment and their future as well as their lives and deaths, injuries....
I think its extremely unfortunate that it appears (at least to me), that many in the US, including their govt and military have never really seen close up the effects of their policies and maybe have no real comprehension of how long lasting ,devastating, and far reaching they are.
More so they ever before in the history of this world.
Discussions like this sure ain't going to make any diff!

Declan and TJ.. I agree with you guys (hey agreement is not negative, right?)

I can think one only one thing complimentary to say about the US govt... and that's the freedom of speech that the US has, including its internet sites. Don't lose it:-)

Sorry doctor Bob but I think this board is a complete and utter waste of time.

Politics is a powerful subject and something which evokes VERY strong feelings in people and to ban 2 posters simply for expressing their feelings in a way which to be fair is far less hostile than these politicians face every single day is just ridiculous.

Both posters used the word incompetent (interestingly one was banned for using it, the other not)......now lets examine an example for a moment and see how that statement stacks up?

Bush has stated his objective to take democracy to the middle east.......the palestinians voted this week in what was probably the fairest (we wont go into the controversy surrounding the way Bush got into power!!!), most transparent and most supported elections anywhere in the WORLD in recent times yet what does he do? Thats right, cos he doesnt like the fact the people gave a huge vote of no confidence in the way the west has treated them over the past few decades by voting in a party with terrorist links, he practically dismisses the whole result. What do you think the result of further alienating the palestinian people will be (not to mention the withdrawal of aid)? Do you think it will save lives or cost them? Do you think it will brink peace, or drive it further away?

The acts of a competent man? Well I believe your constitution allows me at the very least to ask the question!

Well said...err written.
I was surprised that anyone was surprised at the election result, though, to be fair, even Bush admitted it was democracy allowing the people to express their feelings at the voting booth.
....in his view at the corruption of the govt. and the poor state of the health and education system though. Personally I think he missed the point about the west entirely?
I was pretty vocal on the net during the first elections too. I thought that might have had a chance of some impact and prevent some damage.. obviously not :-)

I thought the lack of vision/thought? of the full consequences in the use of the atomic bomb was a good topic as it arguably representative of what is wrong with much of US policy implementation. Well it seems very one-sided and thoughtless to me, but maybe I am just not well informed enough.

A friend of mine, a different Bob to Dr Bob., pointed out I picked a touchy subject as the University of Chicago did part of the atomic bomb research:-)

I won't go to the "The US Politics Compliments board?" again. ..ever!! a waste and soul destroying and upsetting place.

I seem to be losing my ability to write.. not that I ever had much .. but my posts a couple of years ago seemed way easier to compose and readable.
I've heard of eyesight going downhill but not writing ability... I still have difficulty thinking of the right word, but even the sentences I want to say.. sigh

I did post a lot during Bush's election campaign and also bfore the IRAQ war..as I could see where both wre heading..
My problem had been all my foresight has always become too true.. nothing surprises as I have expected it, but been unable to prevent it..sigh
I managed to influence a few people on motives of Bush b4 the IRAQ war, but not enough of the correct people obviously.. so now I just give up, and try to bury my head in the sand or something.
OK when I was in Vanuatu in 2004 I got into an argument on a boat with some foreign aid workers.. and had a few discussions with the sons of the village elders.. but again.. not enough to prevent what is beginning to happen, sigh.

Vanuata is another that was- err "helped" by the US.. so the land is now covered in weeds, so it doesn't grow the foods it used to courtesy of US military. Still there's always coconuts and fish,although the US is still in there ripping off the reef.. unofficially of course! You have to talk to the divers about what they see.

Hey TJ and Tealady, you've been so kind, thankyou. I've no idea if it's worth it. The Politics board, just sitting there, is a standing provocation. No, Jan, I did understand the point of the Einstein post. I suppose it's just that this is all so important. Gabbi may have felt that the Lewis Lapham quote was a bit of US bashing. But I saw it as a really serious comment on sections of the US. Nothing very civil about it I s'pose. Ah well, all this will fade away when there is really something to fight about in 25 years, India, China, Russia, USA, in competition for dwindling oil reserves. And here in Australia (to leave the USA alone for a bit) we're not even starting to prepare. Recycling for Sydney? Don't ask the ALP for that. Building codes so we build houses appropriate to the climate? Anyway you'd know all this stuff. It's just deeply pathetic. But I wanted to thank you guys.

I'm always going to remember this. The snow was black... white snow and blue skies...US money at work.
I'm still not sure how they got US money to work to clean the black off the snow and make the sky blue.. I can picture rubbing the snow with US money?
Why not just wait til the snow melted, then the black would go away too?

I hadn't heard of this, and I still don't understand what was done to help.

I sure hope it balances the damage done by landmines and nuclear bombs and chemicals .. would weapons of mass destruction be an applicable cover-all here?, if one omits the the destruction of environment that supplied a subsistence lifestyle via clearing of vegetation, spreading of weeds, poisoning of land,landmining, flooding, mudslides, removal of coral in reefs, in the name of giving a better GDP or GNP or whatever contrived economic figure anyone cares to think of.. contrived as it doesn't cost the environment or lifestyle, or pollution, or customs or access to fresh water and fresh foods or appearance of the landscape, or.,
but in reality the damage of an environment that can no longer support a subsistence lifestyle practised before this by countless generations, not to mention the global effects building up of global warming & pollution;
the setup of a trade system so that it strongly favours the US mainly but also more industrialised western nations against primary-industry and increasingly poorer countries;
patents which other countries cannot afford to fight even if they had the legal expertise and time or energy to continue an unending fight, again enriching the US at the cost to the nations who really owned the substances or products before the US "discovered" them , again making the other nations poorer in comparison by denying them their own rightful onwership, and fair income stream from the ownership, Also they have to change their own uses of the substances or naming of things to fit in or be sued..even if they haved used the name or product or substance for and are the real "inventors" or owners. Think of Ugg boots from Oz, or the plants used in medicines as examples;
Taking advantage by making agreements with govts of countries that do not have the full comprehension of what they are agreeing to.. like the Marshall Islands (an example).
It's just a few things to maybe think about why the US is not viewed popularly in many countries of the world.
I've viewed TV shows where schools in some countries are teaching of the US imperialists in these times.

Still removing black from snow and turning it white is something. I'll remember that even if I never figure out how the US money did it.

PS. Nothing against any individual or any country really.. just sometimes wish everyone could stand back and look at what seems to me to be happening before its too late..if its not already.

Yes I do realise that black snow led to polluted rivers when it melts and it was cleared probably by fitting some pollution controls in newer factories..or perhaps buiding nuclear power plants?.. but its a good picture of bleaching that snow.. or using US dollars to absorb the black off the snow LOL

I didn't read a lot on the politics board.
The only saying that springs to mind t me was "forgive him, he knows not what he does".. or whatever it is:-)
I usually don't use sarcasm, except in a joking waywhen I hope the other people understand I'm joking!, and I don't like it if I slip.. the place kinda rubs off on me,I guess that means I'm way to easily influenced:-)

However I don't regret giving Dr Bob an exaggerated taste of it.. only in the hope he might understand what most are up against.. although I spelt it out way too much for any subletly, so as a the reader he wouldn't get "the why am I reacting like this feeling", so maybe it was a waste:-)

I do have the(maybe erroneous) impression though, that sublety doesn't work with Dr Bob, at least as far as suggestions on admin goes.

LOL, thanks for your kind words declan.........I know what you mean about not being able to resist the urge to post on the politics board! I see injustice and its like waving a red rag at a bull.......and of course it doesnt do my mental energy reserves any good to get involved (specially given the futility of a few nobodys discussing politics on a mental health board!!! LOL).

24. Drunk Driving on the Internet

An article by John Dvorak in the April 1994 issue of PC Computing magazine described a bill going through Congress that would make it illegal to use the internet while drunk, or to discuss sexual matters over a public network. The bill was supposedly numbered 040194 (i.e. 04/01/94), and the contact person was listed as Lirpa Sloof (April Fools backwards). The article said that the FBI was going to use the bill to tap the phone line of anyone who "uses or abuses alcohol" while accessing the internet. Passage of the bill was felt to be certain because "Who wants to come out and support drunkenness and computer sex?" The article offered this explanation for the origin of the bill: "The moniker 'Information Highway' itself seems to be responsible for SB 040194... I know how silly this sounds, but Congress apparently thinks being drunk on a highway is bad no matter what kind of highway it is." The article generated so many outraged phone calls to Congress that Senator Edward Kennedy's office had to release an official denial of the rumor that he was a sponsor of the bill.

That's just the point.. to honestly discuss politics where there are opposing views, it is not possible to stay within Babbles' "civility" guidelines ..where civility is interpreted as agreeing with, being supportive, complimenting.

It's the overtight(and incorrect in my view) interpretation of civility to not allow any disagreement or opposing views to be stated (in case that offends anyone or causes them to feel discomforted)that causes the problems.

Re: the US.. it starts with their education system. they seem to learn little if anything about other peoples cultures, geography or world history..more on the benefits of being a US citizen, the US constitution, anthem, US history, a bit on Canada maybe, although most seem to have learnt a lot more on Physiology and health than I ever did.

Unfortunately Australia has in the past 20 years copied the same concepts in our education system(at least NSW has with its social studies and geography/history). I've complained on a no. of occasions..ironically the last point I made was when someone phoned me shortly after the bombs were dropping on Sept 11th.. informing me there was no confrontation or rift happening... I just replied to turn their TV on before saying anything more..
Of course this didn't help my daughter who got 0% for geography..as she didn't just go to the library and (copy out an answer out of the books as everyone else did) write praises of the way Australia has integrated all of our immigrants and refugees.. but wrote instead on her own and friends experiences(The question was "What do you think..)...oops :-) The teacher accused me, no, it was her employers.. she worked for some Christian Lebanese.

But really I blame the school system for not teaching of what is happening of the differences(both for and against) in race, culture, religion, lifestyle, tribal-extended family support etc. in societies both geographically and historically throughout the world. Apparently I was supposed to teach geography and all about the history and cultures and places in the world.. its not a school systems job? that.. despite the fact the between school, homework(which would take a goo 4 - 6 hrs a night if anyone actually did it all), dancing, band, friends .. there is not a great deal of time left?

I got it from about Gr3 primary school. I had nightmares about being boiled alive in one of those pots by headhunters, usually after running thru jungle and climbing trees , swinging on vines etc.., or falling over the Niagara fallssomtimes in a cooking pot, sometimes in raft, sometimes a dugout canoe..then waking as I crashed at the bottom.. but the different societies and cultures, values, approaches to running a society and lifestyles did get thru to me. Not the we are better .. the differing skills, values and aprroaches and the things good and bad about them all.
At a similar age my children were learning /a'this is the local butcher shop", this is the ;local cake shop".. even "this is an old house in the district?" with associated school excursions..

Like hey?.. I thought my kids picked up that in the stroller? By High school.. in geography they like to start with the local and go outwards.. starting with.. the school grounds??, this is the national park.. it was next door to the school.. in case they hadn't noticed.. up to this is your state.. by school leaving age??

So when asked to write an essay, they blame the parents if child is confused about where Vietnamese come from, what religion, or if they are Muslim... they had never MENTIONED those countries? little only their religion, cultures etc!

The British were IMO , and the opinion of everyone I have come across in my life .. the most tolerant and accepting empire rulers :-). They were fair, tolerant of other cultures .. even liked.
The US , French etc.. were / are still not.
This makes me glad I'm an Aussie when visiting places. I've seen the locals disappear and tell me why too :-)when French or US visitors approach.. even now

On different forum, I and others were sympathetic about Sept 11th, and I was even hit hard emotionally by it, although I expected something similar for years and could see the buildup.
When Bali was bombed.. only a few expressed any thought about it at all, and of those that did most didn't know where Bali was, or hadn't heard of it.. seemed to end up with most thinking Bali was an island maybe near St America or it might be in the Caribbean,..and then thinking that was close to the US..and maybe they had meant to get them.. and this was something to worry about. It kinda hit home at the time.

Yes, I do like individual people from the US, as from everywhere in the world.

Ah, zeugma is back. I remember someone explaining what a zeugma is but it was too obscure to remember. His tone of bitter irony..........the one about the Virginian(?) coal miners!! He'll get the chop sooner or later. It's funny though what passes for civil and what doesn't. I once posted 'Knowing nought, like dogs, but following', and of course 'I agree, this kind of extremist position has no place on psychobabble. Plenty of ordinary decent peple trust the President.' Neither of those are remotely civil compared to the unwisdom thingo. I don't think the moderators are honest in their reasons for blocks. Take that Foot person on the med board, homeless in Bath. I think he got his PBC call because his poetry was an embarrassment. Maybe you really just get blocked if they think you're too pissed off?
Like zeugma says, the civility rules encourage irony, sarcasm, and cleverness. I s'pose the idea is to debate the issues, but are people interested in that, even if they could work out how to do it civilly?

Trouble is, the more Dr Bob tries to keep order, the more people seem to take the piss! (ooops, sorry I meant of course extract the urine!)

"The civility rules encourage irony, sarcasm, and cleverness. " exactly.. they encourage a style of writing and speaking that I don't really think is well, not nice at all.. and certainly hope never to adopt myself!

Declan, you have a point, I used to think,(a couple of years ago), that Dr Bob gave out temporary gags more for the benefit of the poster.. if they seemed to be becoming to upset or obsessed or whatever ..and the break was for their own good.

The application of them however , in my view has escalated , and this mostly no longer applies.
I also have thought over time that I've noticed the application of the gags for other things not directly related to the actual post.. just an accumulation of what has been going on that Dr Bob may have heard of, and , not being all seeing and perfect in judgement etc.. he allows to influence his decision.
That's why I was against the gags and have written .. or at least attempted to express that view before (a while ago).
However just lately I think they are being applied way too frequently. No comment on my thoughts on this :-) However I think their use should be stopped, and Dr Bob should step back and review them .. like Dr Bob and his American deputies need the break this time!

My post was trying to point out just how bad compliments can be:-)

However I sincerely wonder if part of the "discomfort", "revulsion" ?.. can't think of the correct word here ...I feel in reading that style of post( a controlled application of compliments , sarcasm , irony and cleverness ) is genuinely a cultural divide between the Nth Americans and the rest of the world? I say this as my daughter ..genuinely believes one should talk in compliments to people all the time..even if its not what you think? I don't and it's a disagreement we have. .. a kind of generation gap difference of viewing things. I also love the British humour and comedies and hate the US soapies.. whereas she loves the US soapies and their sense of humour.. which I don't get?
She really believes one should say.. oh that's a lovely dress..or whatever.. even if you think oh boy.. she's not going to wear that ?.. or whatever the topic is.. whereas I'd say.. straight out if asked what I thought , that I don't think it suits the person and it's not my taste etc.. She thinks this is running them down..I think the compliment is sarcasm, and, if I ask someone's opinion.. like I want it?.. otherwise why ask? I can make up my own compliments?? I LIKE people's opinions even if they may not be want I want to hear? OTOH if I do say I like smething or is great..I mean it..and they know it!
I never, until the past couple of years ,realised the cultural divide was so great? If it is? I feel the same on another forum, and I'm not the only one to feel that some of us were "gagged": etc just because they US moderators didn't understand our sense of humour or the way we phrased things? At the same time I feel a lot of what they say is kinds"false" or not really meant,and I get ,at best nothing out of, reading thru entire threads like this?? .. .. grins

My German-born doctor was saying to me that in Germany it's not considered rude to go up to a stranger on a bus and say 'I don't like your coat'. Whereas Americans seem to have problems with, say, fart. I was wondering if the existence of influence and empire predisposed a people to euphemism.

But lets imagine a conversation about Iraq or Bush that proceeded along the lines outlined by Dinah. So all 'I statements'. Discussion of issues rather than people. No negative campaigning. (Rather takes the fun/point out of it.) I suppose you could argue that the USA should avoid entanglement with dubious regimes, cut down its imports of foreign oil, and maybe withdraw troops from just a few of the 123(?) countries in which they have them.

There was a conversation on Politics about 'Do you like Bill O'Reilly?' There's an almost limitless gulf there.

I saw 'Goodnight and Good Luck' yesterday, you know George Clooney's black and white film about Ed Morrow and Joe McCarthy. I thought it was extraordinarily good, literally breathtaking in parts.

Hi Declan,

Well that figures about Germany. I probably have ancestors from that part of the world in me too, as well as Irish an English :-)

I had a German born doctor too, and she has recently returned to Australia. A long way to go, but I need some more scripts, so thanks for the reminder to make an appointment.
They cover hormones in the German doc training, but not in the Oz medicine courses I think?

I just got some videos out yesterday, I'll have a look out for that one thanks.. or is it a new movie out?

Watched the old John Cleese "Clockworks" video tonight.. laughed myself silly :-)...which was good.. (seen it before once a while ago, but that's one advantage of having a bad short-term memory :-)

I too have NO idea of why fart was moderated.. (mentioned before on alter). I guess you can't say burp? OK flatulence would be preferable.

It's no wonder I don't feel comfortable posting there and usually avoid comments what is happening on a personal note.

There really must be some cultural divide.
Actually I was thinking I'd only noticed it in the past 2+ years or so...since posting on babble, LOL.. but I was reading a thread on admin tonight where someone mentioned the US thinking on an alternate word for cigarette(at least many years ago)...and I remember my experience as a 15 yr old teenager at school with a girl newly arrived from the US, LOL. I offered her one.. I did have the packet of ciggies open and put it across to her at the same time.. so it should have been obvious what I was offering, LOL. On a forum I guess you only have the words.

I didn't know it meant that at the time!.. ah well
so I have come across this cultural difference before...just probably not much direct US contact in between... and certainly never anywhere where you are not allowed to discuss what the problem is in someone's reaction.

Although I think many of them just like to run and yell .. help..I'm offended .. and seem to get a kick out of seeing someone "punished" for it. It's often the same people I've noticed too. Strange that. I guess you could say they are just more sensitive.. but they never stop to think that their being offended can actually offend in itself, especilly when they get their desired reaction... the humiliation/punishment of the poster.

Sigh, people like that exist in Sydney too, in increasing nos it seems...and probably always existed everywhere I guess. I never noticed it in BN before I moved down here though.

Of course I'm not against moderation in itself.. jst the degree and extent..and that mostly all it takes is someone to say I'm offended ..then there's no explanations allowed.
You can't be allowed to be "offended" merely as you don't like someone's point of view in politics!

I don't want to be a part of anywhere that ..can you call it discrimination? or just a lack of freedom of speech to express one's view .. It IS upsetting , though why its should be so upsetting I have to question myself..it IS only a board on the net!!.... and alter is almost dead at present.

I've wasted time getting myself upset about politics and the state of the world, corruption, the arrogance, greed etc LOL
It's better I just avoid the place. I sure aren't able to give anyone a helping hand or any such thing.
Maybe my post partly opened someone's eyes .. with luck.. but somehow I doubt it.
If I posted some of my thoughts, I don't think Dr Bob could leave them up there, although they are liberal in the US..with the new laws I'm not as sure.
He can't won't let anyone who is not pro the current administration have their say. I mean in a civil, non personal attack, well written way.

I sometimes wonder too where DrBob's funding comes from. Perhap it could be cut off and that would shut down the board?

Avoiding politics is probably best for people who are depressed and/or anxious? ..definitely best for me at present.
Thinking seriously about politics and getting one's thoughts involved ...shakes head..can't be therapeutic?

Still putting forward one's view on that politics board has, I guess, a similarily to speaking one's mind under a olden days England or most olden days countries... if your disagreed with the ruling party, king or emperor anyway or any communist dictatorship or Saddam's dictatorship too I guess? Many other countries too, I think the huge majority of countries and places both geographaically and historically have not allowed fredom to express one thoughts .. unless they were complimentary or favourable or able to suggest improvements with "sensitivity" to the current regime.
I haven't counted the no of countries with do not allow freedom of speech as present, but I've a feeling it would be the majority.

The consequences of speaking against on babble are nearly so not as great. What's a gag when put in persective

I still believe preferably NO board or a "Compliments to the US politics board ONLY" ie. complimentary or favourable or able to suggest improvements with "sensitivity" to the current regime
and these objectives need to be clearly spelt out at the top of the board.

Add to that I've been finding it harder and harder to type and write or think of the word or sentence I want to say..and It was /is taking me hours... so I'm going to try to stay off babble, at least until things change!

A few of my thoughts on alter at present:

I fear that Dr Bob has almost "killed off" alter. This is caused not just by the gags, and "imposition of civility rules" which prevents many people from posting when they do understand how they are applied; maybe especially those people who drop in to alter and the meds boards with the idea of trying to help out, and share experiences with others for mutual benefit.

but also the amending code to prevent posts coming up directly in google searches.. terrific idea though for admin, social etc boards.. not for alter.. a death knell.

Also makes searching for old posts difficult if you only get a link to the board for that period..impossible, when the link is DrBob's home page.
It makes alter almost useless. It prevents new people who are also interested or have tried things from coming in to posts their experiences or what works and doesn't work for them etc. ..
or anyone from dropping in with a quick point.

Google hits on direct posts on relevant topics was a source of newbies for the whole of babble not just alter. It was a way of "finding " babble for many including myself.

It also makes alter, as a place to store your experiences with things and search back to find what happened(for those of us with poor memories)useless,.. or a place to search for what was previously posted on a topic useless..so as a source base of knowledge and experience it becomes useless.

I've thought for a long time now that babble should be subdivided into alter and a meds boards..and the rest of babble. Have alter and meds boards fully google searchable directly to the posts; and the rest of babble just link to the main page of the relevant board for the period, or Dr Bob's main page fo admin links maybe.
Also there needs to be different rules of "civility" for alter and meds board to rest of babble. On alter and meds board, accuracy and the effect of harmful advice or just selling something also should be considered in the "rules". I've been worried a few times that people may just follow what someone else says.
It's fine to talk about experiences, but not to say take a much as xxx as you like, it's the same as eating food.. something like which concerned me before...and has concerned others too.

I don't think the gags should occur on alter and the meds board, and those gagged on other boards should not have their gags carried across to alter and the meds boards. Completely independant moderation.

Also (on later and meds boards only)we should all have an ability to edit or delete our own posts as we think fit. If we do post something considered harmful or offensive,posts should be queried on the board, and the posters should have a chance to remove or edit their posts, with any apologies if necessary. after it is all fixed , the wueries etc shuould be reoved..leaving a more informative style board.. but only for those 2 boards.
Of course personal experiences, thougts and jokes should still be encouraged.. making it a forum rather than a persoanl experiences references text!

In some cases complete blocks will be needed.. but I suspect they already occur anyway.. like posts who just try to sell something.

I'd also have liked to have seen alter have links to some supplement companies (like iherb, or Physicians formula etc)for purchasing supps that we can link to .. and commission go to the maintenance of alter.
I think it wold be beneficial to many as well as a source of income.

don't think this blog sends email messages unless one replies directly as a reply to comment..instead of just typing in empty box.. not sure.. but it's not great
TJ did reply though.. look on blog, if ya didn't get an email reply.

I don't know I think Dr Bobmay be into that punishment stuff.. like reward/punishment behaviour modification stuff...which I'm way too old for, as well as being a great way of destroying any hard won self respect!!!
Might be OK for children and dogs to a small degree, when applied VERY briefly...but there again I think most carry it waaay too far.
Did ya see that SBS show on Tranquility Bay etc.. the US style behaviour modifcation applied to high school age kids in some private exxy establishments/read prison. It'd take a while for self esteem to be restored after that!
They're into that box stuff here too in some schools.. since the 80's that I know of. Not sure if they still are. never worked as far as I could tell..except maybe to make the teacher feel in POWER. It's a form of time-out.. and DrBob applies his internet form with the bans... and I've wondered how much of a power kick he gets from it at times.

I'm pretty much dead against it..and, as I've told Dr Bob on many occasions,dead against his bans too in general.
Personally I consider myself a bit above a lab rat etc!
So seeing as the bans are continuing , and being incorrectly applied ...I've been ..for the past couple of years or so taking trying to take myself away from babble. Almost left now :-) Politics takes the cake with the application of the bans.
Others seem to have more self control and just leave. I always have to keep checking on how folk are doing!!!

I of course mailed bob with my disapproval of my block but just got the usual flannel back from him. He's a closed mind declan so not worth wasting your time discussing anything with him.

Funny actually how americans seem to rant and rave about democracy, justice and freedom of speech yet when it actually comes down to it all most of them REALLY want to do is tell YOU how to behave. Bob is no different in this respect. His site ignores almost every one of the basic building blocks on which american freedoms are SUPPOSED to be built on.

He should rename the baord 'Politics for pansies!'

I've just looked in again at the admin board......MORE posters getting blocked, and the politics board is becoming so surreal its quite bizarre.

I shall not waste much time with it anymore.....its politics for pansies run by a dictatorship! Not the kind of 'society' or club I wish to affiliate myself with to be honest.

I'll post on alter as and when I feel the need to either ask advice or help others, but the other boards can carry on with whatever idiots wish to spend their lives sucking up to Dr Bob or trying to change his closed mind.

I'm glad you don't feel like breaking down and crying or apologising in case you offended anyone or crawling to DrBob and begging forgiveness for whatever you did wrong, even if you have no idea what it is! It's an expected reaction from the "punishment" treatment.
I saw it happen too much on the thyroid forum back last year, remember?
It is similar to what happens to the kids in Tranquillity Bay and hundreds of other reform-type schools in the Us as well..apparently they call it "tough love" or something.

Honestly TJ, it seems like power goes to forum owners head's too.. same as politicians (like Hitler etc ..was supposed to be alright when first democratically elected.. then power kinda went to his head). It's a lesser degree with these forum owners due to a lesser amount of power maybe?
I guess its like some in the police force and all in authority in they ain't careful, or are not of a special personality type or something.
I see it all the time in people in authority unfortunately.

So I'm turning DrBob's experiment (*if it is one) on the "reward and punishment" method of behaviour modification effect on forum posters around into observing the effect of "power over posters" on forum owners.
Actually I DO think it is some subconscious type experiment on DrBib's behalf. If he is trained in psychology he probably can't help it!
When I first came to the forum..around end Aug 2003... I just signed my nick in without reading the fineprint..as always Who has time to read all that stuff.
I just expected it to be like other forums, where if I just act myself and try to help people and myself by sharing info of what seems to do what etc..then no problems. And until around Jan2004 I didn't know the forum had any "strange" rules at all as noone on babble or alter when it was formed got banned etc.
I read back or around then I noticed there were one or 2 people then leaving/ or had left , and they seemed to imply in their parting posts that the forum was being run as an experiment.. to observe internet forum poster interactions etc I assumed..
I thought it may have been to start with, or maybe it started out to help patients? I still don't know.

The thing is in the first 3 or 4 months there was none of these bans etc that I noticed.. at least on babble and then alter when DrBob moved us over there, I think Gabbi and Lar were having some "disagreement" with a young girl which was time consuming and emotionally draining for many who read on a little of it..
Those first few months I didn't realise admin and social etc as I hadn't read all the writng about or links etc...just the posts on alter and before that babble :-) Ignorance is bliss: sometimes ;-)

I could see no good reason(other than experimental to observe the effect) of leaving some of the damaging stuff on babble..even if it was on admin and social.

Anyway few left like Ron after Lar's first? ban and you know it seems to be gradually escalating with increasing bans ever since (sometimes a one step backwards, 2 steps forward) But generally the place aint what is was!

It's now reached the point where I too can no longer be an active poster, and don't feel right being a part of it all. Maybe I don't have a religion exactly but I do have this funny strong values I live by that people have commented on over the years as being religious in intensity .. maybe they are my religion. I just don't want a set of rules and guidelines that someone else thought up

Anyway I agree with ya TJ, I'm stopping most of my postings too. Same as you. I wouldn't go and dramatise that I'm leaving etc.. but I'm backing off. I have been trying for a loo-ong while

I'm really glad you feel much the same re babble at the moment. That gives me a bit of conficence that i'm not feeling it all wrong!

Anyway, done a bottle of wine tonight (I do one most nights now) so will keep this fairly short as the old fingers dont quite keep up with the brain you know and its a pain spell checking about 4 times to get a posting at least half way readable! :-)

I actually like the babble boards and even an anti authoritarian like me can see the logic in his faily unyielding approach to descent but on the politics board his ideals just make no sense at all. I've jokingly called it politics for pansies run by a dictator but I honestly feel thats very close to the truth of the matter. I love politics (specially world politics) but I cant operate under his ridiculous constraints. I'll post on alter when I finish my ban and thats it. I will however state my case on the politics board first.

I like discussing world politics and economics too.. It's just too hard and timecomsuming and stressful to type it!, and even to think how to express myself or what it is I want to say!..and The nonsensical "rules" on the politics board do make any non-vague political discussion impossible.
I'm sure thankful I don't live in some parts of the world though.

Plus if only I could reduce to 4 edits ;-))

BTW editing my last post to you took so long I was late (about 8 mins or so) for the physio. .. who said you're late!! I have another appointment at 2:30.(it was 2:07), and proceeded to tell me off. I was supposed to have an appointment lasting an hour. For this sI had to wait for about 3 weeks!
Other physios have given me 1.5 hrs in the past as a first appointment!
So I said if that is the case and you now can't fit me in, perhaps I should reschedule as I wanted to have my knees looked at.
She said she'd have no time for that, and I should make another appointment when I learn to be on time!
What really got me was she had sat herself down, and was about to proceed to tell me what to do(had out charts of how to get out of a chair!, without asking for my referral or asking what was wrong, or if I had previously been to other phsios and what progress I had made etc!

So I'm glad I didn't go there!!
The better physio in this area left for a hospital post teaching the stuff,..after I was scheduled but before I got to see her.

I do have a couple of great physios in BN.. and they have great equipment too, to help exercise etc....none at this place!
I do have a list of other physios. I'm relieved I didn't waste $75 there!

Well 4 weeks banishment from the asylum (good description of the politics board I think) this time!

Interesting to note our discussion last night was the longest thread on the board and nobody was offended by our discussion, facts that will of course go right over Bobs head sadly. He is a closed mind, with a blinkered vision of what he wants to achieve and IMHO he really has no idea of the damage he is doing to real people along the way.

I dont suck up to people and never have, and wont be doing so here either. What makes me puke are some of the lackeys Bob has who hang off his every word. They need to grow up and formulate a few opinions of their own!

Banned for saying the UK and US governments are the biggest state sponsors of terrorism! LOL, it'd be funny if it wasnt a fact.

I was saying somewhere before (probably in this thread) the whole of babble is reminding me more of more of the US reform schools for teenagers. they are exxy private establisment swith names like "Tranquility Bay".
The believe in this reward/punishment stuff.. mostly the punishment.. tough love I've heard it referred to as.
Dr Bob's bans remind me of them..and the way you can't question etc.

And they produce much the same effect.. break somepeople, make others end up on tranqillizers, antiD's m anxiety meds.. bascially cause a loss of self confidence, and turn people into a heap of nerves:-)
The only reason I stayed was for the all friends I had made on alter.. but most now have left or are driven off and only come back very occasionally. I guess they could have drifted away and time changes things and commitments. I hope everyone is OK.
I thought Lar was increasingly acting upset like some of those in the reform schools, and yet not realsing why?
Anyway I've had enough , at least for now . so I said what I thought, and won't be returning , at least for a long while, to see if it had any effect.
normally I don't have any much in the way of replies or acknowledges of what I say. I gues I'm used to it. I just don't fit in there I guess?
I didn't think I fitted in on social when I tried there either.
Sometimes I feel like I don't exist. I can write something and have noone directly reply, and yet they comment on what I say as if it was what they thought later on in talking to someone else or starting a new thread?even copying and pasting, without replying to me?
So I did it with Verne too I guess, although mine wasn't agreeing with him.
Do you think he was being sarcastic as well as me? with his comments re Bush and Thank God?

Re the no direct replies, I wouldn't mind if it wasn't most of the time.. occasionally you'd expect that..or maybe people read something sleep on it and forget where they read it?.. but to comment directly after within minutes and start a new thread to discuss without acknowledging the person who wrote it seems not quite right, sigh.
When this happens to the majority of your posts, I kind feel like I'm ostracised, LOL

I don't mean you and Declan either., and its not just this forum either. I think it only happens to me, but maybe it happens to everyone, I don't know.

couple of comments I put on politics board, only now I'm too tired and can't see the point in continuing...some'll never "get" it, as in the Milford experiment ( link given last post),
and go on about their "Freedom"? Huh? The US has not been attacked in the past couple of centuries? Ya can't count the destruction of a few warships in Pearl Harbour.. that wasn't an invasion.. just intended as a strategic reduction in some future enemy weapons, so I don't understand this loss of "US Freedom" as a rationale for bombing another country? I gave up.. It is all too energy zapping or something :-)

Support and bloody education hey? Well, maybe it's like life in general...look who gets in office (deputies). Hey Jan, the Verne post. I think I recall it. I imagine Verne, sitting at a computer in Iowa, having a couple of drinks, and feeling more and more scornful and scarcastic. But it never occurred to me, Jan, that he was being scarcastic with you personally. He feels, as he said once, that 'they say they don't like our government etc etc, but I don't buy it. I think they hate us'. He has a point. It's a democracy (with a sense of entitlement) so naturally there will be a moral reflection on the voters. I dunno, I dunno, what's this all about? Anyway I got 'self regard, shamelessness and humiliation as the drivers of public policy' through. I just need to move that into 'the role of faith and narcissism in foreign policy'. Wouldn't it be great to have a few civil Sunnis and Islamists on psychobabble? Who is this support and education (what education?) for? I can't help it etc etc.
My 2 bobs worth on freedom is that it's a kind of mantra to erase thought and fill the person saying it with good clean virtuous feelings. The rest of the world is not fooled. [What will happen if/when the USA bombs Iran?]
The only place that the USA has supported freedom is in Europe (isn't it?), and it was helped to do so by having the USSR being so terrible. Its record in the 3rd world hasn't been crash hot.

War itself is also well known as a great leveller.. everyone is mostly the same under attack .. also in ill health and old age.. the other 2 relative social levellers.

Think on the after effects for many after the black plague in Europe etc. It may take a couple of generations before ONLy the benefits are felt and remembered though!
It's about the ONLY benefit of many disasters including war I can think of!
The standards of living for the surviving "peasant" or "serfs" improved .. it was the end of "ownershiP' of peiple in parts of europe.. as they could escape and get a good living elsewhere.

Unfortunately wars aren't fought the same these days... culling the population is not the result or even aim.. the aim seems to be to destroy the environment without culling the people.. so the damage is way more permanent and the benefits nil, except for the winners with the plunder, economic boost etc as long as they are not interested in actually moving into the "destroyed" territory to resettle themselves... the 'typical US war'.

all written in a cold hard factual non feeling way of course

otherwise.. yes, its a pity the politicians don't seem to have understood any lessons from history..even recent history.

I was recently surprised at the size of the empire under Gengis Khan.. didn't realise for a short time it extended from the east coast of China to Hungary !.. some nation, even if it couldn't last long.

I've noticed Dr Bob responds to suggestions ..like the wording "I hope noone finds this offensive". This he takes as a kinda flag, in case it is I think :-)) Noticed this before..

Now you could join and improve the party! Whenever I've tried reasoning though , I give up usually. Too much effort for my energy levels these days , too much corruption for my depression, as you say.. a lack of intelligence or reasoning power or empathy, and maybe I'm just not so idealistic and energetic and enthusiastic.. :-)

ya know I almost joined at age 15(went to the 6 meetings after which you have to join), but didn't let on as to my age.. If I'd gone to any more I would have had to sign up and I couldn't as I was too young..
They did ask me if I was interested in representing the local group though.. I was but couldn't admit it! :-)
In those days I had heaps of energy, thought fast, could come up with an answer at the crack of a whip, and loved politics and history etc. I went on and started in economics and pyschology at uni... before switching to Computer Science so I could get a well paid job in those days.
By the time I was voting age though, all of the stuff I wanted to get in was implemented anyway! I did do a fair bit of my own campaigning (self directed)though in those days;-)
In those days there was a LOT that obviously needed to be done.
In those days I was a bit over-idealistic and knew what I wanted...now?
Now I get too tired, can't think fast, memory is shot, can't even think of the correct word to express my thoughts..especially succinctly! I'd never make it, even only in a support role.. besides I don't like all the attacking that goes on in parliament, LOL

One ex government employee(not Australian, but I'm fairly sure it's universal from what I've glimpsed)got out as it's too corrupt... sigh. It wears people down after a while.

You should have seen the choice in Vanuatu when I was over there(2004)!!

Sorry for my bad expression, I meant I think that I'd just done the same thing by taking quotes out of one of Verne's posts and putting them in my post without replying personally to Verne..somthing I've deplored others doing to me time and time again on babble and other forums(thyroid ones US based as well) over the years:-)

But I was hoping Verne did mean it sarcastically..as I did, .. but I didn't want to highlight that on politics board as I don't think DrBob or deputies understood Verne's post in that way and I didn't want to get him into any trouble by agreeing with him directly.
Also I was hoping that Verne would see I was agreeing with him if he did mean it in a sarcastic way, and maybe NOT see anything wrong if he didn't mean it that way.

I have to say when I first found babble I thought it was great, but now I just see it as a (voluntary) concentration camp run by an authoritarian nutter who believes more in his rules than he does of the welfare of his clients.

I notice the politics board is now pretty much empty.......whats the point in having a politics board if you cant express yourself freely? NO point at all IMO.

If I had said the centre/left was fractured or incoherant, the result could have been the same. Some people don't want to talk politics. Not much happens on Politics, and when a block comes everyone moves over to Admin to play team sports. And that's when it gets hurtful. That policy/people dichotomy wasn't much use. It's about the centre/left having been unable to develop a convincing alternative narrative and why that is so. What's the point of discussing things when you can get stuck into each other. I dunno.

yep, it wasn't what u said.
I remember in high school (modern history) comparing the differing economic styles of different countries .. from Japan, communism, US capitilism , Aussie, Brit etc.
Even then the US "left" was more right than the Oz "right"..
They thought u meant an attack on their liberal party, LOL (by attack on the centre-left:-), so it must be pretty unchanged

I really love all these people who make no attempt to understand before judging and sentencing :-)
I was leaving there back when Lar was first getting banned etc and many left.. around when TJ first showed up.. Jan 2004 I think?LOL,.. , so now I have some incentive to leave!
I needed the incentive it as the place has really not helped at all lately, just upset most people.

I agree with this. Not sure if I answered b4, but I think it has something to do with the reason I didn't get "into" politics.. apathy.. most parties were much the same.. no real incentive until last few years, since Whitlam times

and centre-left wouldn't I assume to attracted by a corruption angle.. as in, for the money or prestige or power or cushy job that much ..at least idealistically I'd suspect?.. so no attraction there

I really have no idea... but I did note a lack in the young Labor party.. only in that one brach and for those few weeks...maybe it was all over?.. I don't know

I've known people ( much older if still alive) who were in the Old communist party(and no their portrayal today or on the TV show was WRONG.. not sure how that was allowed when the characters are still living either!, then agaiin the people weren't the pushy type they were betrayed as I heard) and in the Labor party in the days where struggling fo workers rights really counted..
That need is really no longer there today.. most survive, except perhaps for the huge no of teenagers and females that are employed "outside" the system , off payroll, as "family " members, and even they are getting food survival pay!
The family employment bypass shows a great integration of family in our society;-)
The ONLY thing that is going to stop that type of employment is an improvement in "real" unemployment level..as opposed to official unemployment level..which doesn't count housewives, children (under 25 or so!!) etc..all those excluded from the social security network. Maybe a cutback in immigration would help the employment level.. I don't know, it should help but that's only if we don't keep falling further behind. Now , with the hih resorce prices we should be better off than ever!, and yet most kids can't get "legal" jobs... hence the high rate at uni.

bad luck about getting blocked again. It probably means you are a normal mature male or something like that.
There was once a club of some kind( I suspect built around Lar when he first got blocked )where all the people ,at least from the US and Canada, got invited who had been blocked by Dr Bob. That meant it was an exclusive club and I couldn't join I :-) .. not that I wanted to anyway.
so I guess if you get blocked you're more normal and in , than out of it.. or you follow that logic.

I'm not able to write very coherently anymore and it's taking numerous attempts at editing etc, so on top of all the other reason I'm not posting on babble.
But I think I may have "stumbled on the cause. I think it's something TJ should look at too..and Lar and JLx actually.. and Bob on here..
Just B1 ..which I've started to write about..and its linked in some way to Piracetam too and the way it works in the brain..somehow..
and magnesium.. calcium etc.. and serotonin and dopamine

Maybe I should have left the Penguin bit out. Then, when he went to block me, it would have had to have been for the *as if* business, which was more fun anyway (for reasons that escape me). Maybe when I go back I should congratulate him on blocking me for my attitude (which has been bad lately); for divining, behind the actual words, the mocking intent. Jan was in reserve as an Australian unlikely to support John Howard. I remain eager to offend Americans who have not heard of John Howard but who would be offended by someone mocking someone about whom they do not care etc etc.

I once mucked up a good opiate effect with piracetam. Nothing that couldn't be finally strangled and subdued. I had just bought my first batch of the 1,600mg tablets. And then once I got this good racing system that required you to bet on lots of races and I was trying centrophenoxine and mucked up the betting (doubled it and lost all of it) and then left my wallet in the TAB. After these experiences on top of the reverse ones with anticholinergic drugs (for the side effects of older APs) I thought I'd better leave the Ach system alone.

Have you heard of this form of (it might be) B1 called benfotiamine(sp?)

My son's girlfriend works in Hungry Jacks for around $8 an hour. Maybe they should bring back concription? But it's more than that that is the difference. The spirit of the times seems to be against it. Beazley...you'd think/hope we could do better (why am I mentioning Beazley? noone ever mentions Beazley). It's like the corporate world has finally strangled everything...this is the sort of conclusion you come to in middle aged isolation.....

ya see Dec, they wouldn't know about penguins so shouldnt comment rightly.. Penguins are a south of equator bird ONLY. They probably aren't providing great conditions for them in a zoo over there!
Just like they wouldn't really know who Howard was(lucky hey).. though he was over there on a tour recently.. Didn't someone point out to him that Australia ws a sovereign country and can therefore make its own mind up.. ie,. not a US puppet state?

I found it strange how everything I had to write on that politics board had to be reworded to make it understandable to Nth Americans?
They commented on comparisons to Hitler.. well I did first try others.. but realised..its the only thing they comprehend..so even if not exact,and better comparisons could be made, it's just they have no understanding or have not ever heard of it, and are not likely to look to comprehend either.
They(in general) really do little history and I think no geography..which is why they think they can just go and sort out the world and it'll all be fine!
It' sad for the world really.
Found it sad too that instead of realising why everyone has to do it when chatting to the US. they instead decided to give it a name!! (Make it a US discovered and named phenomena?? LOL)

I think there's probably more to DrBob's discrimination than he makes out.
Get a group of people to design a set of guidelines..and then see what happens when they are followed fairly strictly. Don't make reasonable adaptations.. even if suggested.. just observe and study and collate statistics on how long some people are prepared to beat them selves over the heads, suffer perhaps the humiliation of being publicly blocked etc..and how often they come back.. how many leave etc.. excellent study, no?
Politics discriminately enforced rules.. with only allowing positive comments on teh "ruling" powers, and only allowing,negative comment on those opposed.. eg Saddam and Hitler ,Ida Amin etc.. creates an excellent study in what people will put up with?
It makes sense...even if only subconsciously done.. it's Dr Bob's training unfortunately.
Guess that's my opinion FWIW.. not much I guess:-)
Changes could easily be made.. but aren't.. so I figure it must that this observation/ study thing(even if subconsious overruling what would be the "right" thing to do.

They wouldn't vote for Johnnie if there was an alternative government who looked like it could contain interest rates and keep the voters in the style to which they've become accustomed. Howard is not such a hypocrite as Blair. (This is not much of a compliment) I remember supporting Howard for the leadership against Peacock. My only defense (and not a good one) is that he stood for something........(more than I thought). Only awful people can stomach politics. I must go and read the saturday papers.

What's happened before is that I type out a thing but forget to put my name at the top, and then it all vanishes after it tells me to put my name there.....

I think we have to give up on politics at psychobabble. Look at Zeugma's block. Around 10 weeks for saying that Bush had abolished the FDA (no such luck) and that the Administration was beyond reproach by administrative fiat on PB. Well, if you can't reproach anyone or anything you can't discuss politics. Having been inspired by Lewis Lapham in Harpers I did think about a thread on "Imperial Narcissism". If Bob was away for a bit it might be interesting. Maybe 'Imperial Narcissism and Virtue'? How about that? (This is the most fun I've had all morning, but that's not saying much)

Support and education? How come there are no civil islamists on psychobabble? Are there any in your neck of the woods, TJ? It would be great to have a civil islamist, from Fallujah, say, to defend against American incivility.

I've mailed him TWICE about my block but he's ot been courteous enough to give me a reply yet........I actually said in one of my mails that 'for a fellah so obsessed with civility you sure know how to be hurtful and discourteous to people'.

whatever Israel's goals, hopes, and intentions etc are I'm not discussing, but they can't accidentally wander into the Gaza strip. Dr Bob.. to me the word "lost" although it can be taken to mean dead.. doesn't it cover things like missing in action, lost in the desert, deserted (differing to lost in the desert windstorm), dead as a result of catching the flu (as happened to more US soldiers in WWI than being killed in action.
To me at least "killed" as in "killed in action" is the correct, specific term used in war for soldiers who were killed in action?

It seems to me at least that support for one side is "offensive: to the opposing side is it not?

Like if I was a Nazi back decades ago, and I was supportive or the Nazi goals and made helpful suggestions on how to further their goals, Wouldn't some people find my being supportive and offering positive helpful suggestion to achieve their goals offensive? (I would;-)

I've always been against the politics board (as you know:-), but I guess I'm trying to spell it out a bit more specifically. The huge majority of supportive posts me make feel..well "not good" is the best way of putting it.
I think supportive of one side without considering the others side and without trying to work on (this means discuss) both sides to come to an understanding is really quite hurtful to anyone on the other side or who can see more than just a small facet of the argument.
There are people from all sides or who have friends from all sides of the conflict(s) in the middle east that do read and post on babble, and yet there is a general feeling that "supportive" only means "supportive" of one side..
I really find it difficult to understand why you do not understand this?
Ah well.. trying to stay away so i don't get upset and offended...

I really don't like babble anymore.. the politics board really got to me, the admin board always did anyway..

Interestingly he stresses how the site is for 'support and hlep' yet when a poster offered a suggestion of how he could have dealt with my post he simply asks if the poster thinks he shouldhave acted in that way. I often get the impression we are simply all bobs little toys........I'm sure I am wrong to get that impression but its how it feels sometimes all the same.

The best way to get a reply is to say you don't want one but ask instead for him to reflect on what you have said. That way you might get one. But are you sure you really want one. I know hope springs eternal (well, maybe not) but you should know better.

anyway..actually I've never emailed DrBob.and don't really want to I guess :-)

I found it was my computer .. I'd tried to block myself from admin only once before and thought I'd removed it, but apparently not. I have now though.
I have a read around babble sometimes, but so far have resisted posting again. I'm trying to wean myself off the plave. I was just getting a tad too upset by the whole setup/the punishment ethos, the bans, the humiliation of some posters, the really stupid rules for an internet forum.. like the DNP, etc etc
I suspect that's the idea.. subconsiously at least.. to get some reactions to unusual sets of rules and observe..
Besides all of that , the politics board made me realise just how much I really disliked Israel and US policies. I'd never really thought about it before that much I guess.. well I knew I was against a lot of what was happening.. but just how upsetting the whole situation/arrogance was, I hadn't realised.
So now I know I guess I'd better just avoid the place.
I'll try just to read on alter I guess.
i'm still trying the B1..I got some strange rather large rises in blood prssure at first, which I suspect may have been ADH kicking in via chloride channel changes...but really no idea.
This seems to have lessened now.. just took my 9th injection, anfd I'm taking sublinguals of B1, a multiB, abd biotin as well. I even tried one inositol cap, but didn't notice anything much with just the one cap.
I'm not real good with giving myself injections.. not sure how to avoid hitting some blood or nerve, though it went OK today:-)
I'm still hoping I've hit on a part solution, as I was getting pretty bad before.
I think I may have..the theory semms to suugest it should help... BUT that's not what counts!
I started trying to make a B1 post.. but after a month , it's a pretty big mess so far

If you're interested have a look at the "B1 headings" tag(down RHS)..I'm trying to link everything from there. Then again, you seem a long way ahead of me with this acetylcholine stuff. I'm rather lost with it all, which is why I was trying to get everything down together as my brain doesn't remember much at all lately.

I did try lecithin once before.That was when I'd taken a bit too much iron, and I had a bad reaction I think?..which TJ helped me over..and lots of magnesium as well.

So what, I may well have downed more wine than I should have, but I'm fully coherent (bar the odd typo) but I just cant tally up his current heavy handed regime with his philosophy of being there to help people. Sorry Bob, but it just don't wash mate!

I recall almost the WHOLE board siding against you with regard to someones block (estelle was it? ok my memory isnt what it was but I think you will know to whom I refer)................NOTHING changed and the poster (to my knowlege) hasn't been seen since.

that's why I started this thread here.. I couldnt bablemal Declan when he was bocked and yet I wanted to talk to him..
so I decided to try to override DrBOb.. and put a post in alter saying anyone who wants to contact Declan and cant caus of his block.. to post here..

EDit added.. well on second thoughts I'm not sure what I said but it was something along the lines of "any alter posters who need to keep in touch" ..posted it on alter so was aimed at alter posters as I don't post on social , etc.. lately on plotics and admin though...regretfully :-)

and u did too.. but none else..which surprised me.
i also emailed Lar and Jlx about this blog..but no replies there either..and i thought JlX may have replied at least, sigh.

Anyway..this thread is my reply to DrboB's ban.
he purposely made it so that noone could be contacted hat was banned and that person could have no contact.
A lot in the US and Canada have exchanged email addies.. especially those who met up..

but for people o'seas it really alienated them..and newbies seeking help.

There was also a "club", sort of for those banned by dr Bob.. invite only , where they posted on a privtae forum amongst themselves.. but I think it was more to be in contact with Lar when he was banned (actually there was more to it that that..mentioned it to you when I was over in the UK, though not sure if u remeber:-)

But for relative newbies like Dec there was no support or contact..and I hated that..
so I set this up to get around DrBob..I wasnt going to let him block me from talking to Dec if I wanted to ask him something !
I could let him know of my support by posting in admin I guess.. but I wanted to chat to him and ask him stuff..and get a reply!!

I've seen comments on admin about the lack of bablemail contact.. and I supposed they were (in a way referring to me and this blog..due to the stats I got over a few days before the comments were posted.. but it may have ben coincidence..
and noone replied to me in babble anymore(or email).. also fits

but really Drbob took down a really well functioning system where anyone could email me (via my nick) if I so chose ..without going thru Drbob..to put in bablemail..so he could block anyone emailing for help while blocked!!

It probably was based on Lar and Gabbi's loud noises over that girl (who wasn't even half in the wrong, and was only a young kid who was really overwhelmed by Lar and Gabbi and their ability to write well I think, and who was really huurt by it all ..even if she overreacted etc.. I think her feelings were genuine and it took a while, but I came to undersatnd what she was going thru even if I couldnt condone her behaviour).

anyway that was about when you appeared on alter.. and Lar was loud on admin. It was something to do with an email that gabbi received from this girl.. I've foprgotten now.. but it wasn't a 'nice" email.. and I gess she said what she thought of Gabbi maybe ..or threatned .. or something
if ya want on and on on admin..that was it!!

I have my own thoughts on why Lar was so vocal.. but I think it started the babblemail block of banned posters.
I don't agree at all.. but reaonable voices arent listened to.
I decided it was all an experiment (probably not purposely designed at first) to see how people react...

I reckon that's partly an ego thing :-)) even if he can justify it. A lot of my posts were quoted around the web.. people click on the links..and get drdbob..instead of the info :-)
see it depends on wheter the site ois meant to help poeple ..or let them join in this experiment and find out what the site is about..most people clicking on the google links are just saerching for helping info.. not into all this other shit... (oops)
